Day one was bliss. She hiked the Pinnacle Ridge route, phone in airplane mode, the blue dot of her position sliding perfectly along a downloaded contour map. No buffering. No dead zones. She felt like a god of the backcountry.

She Googled it. Nothing. Reddit had one deleted post titled “DO NOT HIKE TRIAL CRACK” with a single comment: “It’s not a trail. It’s a crack.”

He finally looked up. His eyes were the same electric green as the moss. “The trial crack isn’t a glitch, ma’am. It’s a feature. You agreed to the terms.”
