(literally "big-bottomed ants"), also known as Atta laevigata , are a traditional edible insect from Colombia , particularly in the Santander region.
They are large, queen leaf-cutter ants harvested during the rainy season (March–June). After removing the wings, they are and have a flavor often compared to popcorn, bacon, or toasted nuts .
