Yesterday, I found an old photograph tucked into a library book—someone’s birthday party from forty years ago. Children in paper hats, a cake with frosting roses, a woman laughing with her whole body. I don’t know who they are. But for a moment, I carried them with me. Their joy touched my Tuesday afternoon. We spend so much of our lives waiting
