The file sat in the corner of a dusty external hard drive, labelled only peanut.avi . No thumbnail, no metadata, just a creation date: December 12, 1999. peanut.avi

Elena found it while clearing out her late uncle’s attic. He’d been a hoarder of obsolete tech—zip drives, MiniDisc players, a Tamagotchi that still beeped mournfully. The hard drive was the size of a brick, and peanut.avi was its only file. She never found the hard drive again
