Growing up in Okinawa, Niihara was exposed to various musical genres, including classical and pop music. Her early interest in singing led her to join local music groups and participate in school music competitions. After completing high school, Niihara moved to Tokyo to pursue a career in music.

During her tenure with Kalafina, Niihara sang on several successful albums, including "The Day" (2012), "Again" (2015), and "Shadow Theory" (2018). Her vocal range and expressive delivery were well-suited to the band's complex compositions, which often featured operatic arrangements and heavy metal instrumentation.

In 2011, Niihara auditioned for Kalafina, a symphonic metal band known for their dramatic and powerful soundscapes. As the new vocalist, she replaced the band's original singer, Yuki Kojima. With Niihara's arrival, Kalafina's popularity soared, particularly in Japan and Europe. Her distinctive vocals and charismatic stage presence helped the band to expand their fan base.

As a female vocalist in a male-dominated genre, Niihara faced unique challenges. In an interview, she mentioned the importance of establishing credibility and respect within the metal community. Despite these challenges, Niihara persevered and developed a loyal following among fans of symphonic metal.
