An arrow whistled through the air — not to kill, but to disarm. The lead guard’s weapon shattered. Robin dropped from the trees, followed by Much, Allan-a-Dale, and Will Scarlet.
“Four against four,” said a voice from the shadows. A woman stepped forward, clad in leather armor, her face hard but her eyes sharp. It was Djaq, the Saracen healer, who had recently joined the outlaws. She held two curved daggers.

Alice looked up, trembling. “Because I saw him murder Thomas of Locksley. And I know where he keeps the proof.” Back at the camp, Alice explained: The Sheriff had been skimming gold meant for King Richard’s ransom, hiding the ledgers in a secret compartment beneath the floor of his private chambers in Nottingham Castle. The elder Thomas had discovered it — and paid with his life.
