Pelorus watched her from the shadows. He saw the fear in her eyes—not the fear of death, but the hollow, gnawing fear of hope being tortured.

“Come with us,” Spartacus said.

The silence that followed was deeper than the Capuan night. Sura’s eyes welled. “Why tell me this?” spartacus: blood and sand

Pelorus smiled. It was a terrible thing, like a crack in a tomb. “No, Dominus. I told her the truth. That is the only poison you cannot buy an antidote for.” Pelorus watched her from the shadows

As Batiatus gurgled and fell, Pelorus knelt beside him. “My father did not keep me alive as a lesson for the other gladiators,” he whispered. “He kept me alive because I knew where he buried the gold he stole from the previous champion. He walked calmly to Batiatus’s private study. The lanista was there, trembling, a dagger in his fat hand.

“You are his heart,” Pelorus said, nodding toward the cell where Spartacus lay. “Batiatus knows this. He will use it. He will break it.”
