He turned and ran. The sand began to crumble beneath his feet. The sky fractured like glass. Elara’s scream turned into a dial-tone. As he dove through the portal back into his cold, cramped pod, he heard the system’s final, cheerful message:
Leo typed it into the cracked terminal of his pod, a ritual performed every morning for the last three years. A shimmering portal, no wider than a door, materialized in the gray wall of his cubicle.
